A petition calling for Elon Musk to be stripped of his Canadian citizenship surpassed 250,000 signatures on Tuesday. The petition accuses the tech billionaire of actions that threaten Canada’s sovereignty. Musk, born in South Africa to Canadian-born Maye Musk, acquired Canadian citizenship through his mother.
The petition, launched on February 20, claims that Musk’s activities, particularly his support for U.S. President Donald Trump, are damaging Canada’s national interests. Musk, who also holds U.S. citizenship, mocked the petition in a now-deleted post, stating that “Canada is not a real country” on his social media platform, X.

The petition’s sponsor, Canadian MP Charlie Angus of the New Democratic Party, framed the movement as an opportunity for Canadians to express their frustration with the growing power held by billionaires and political extremists.
Although such petitions do not have the power to enforce change, they can prompt an official government response. However, Canadian parliament is currently suspended and will not reconvene until March 24. According to Canadian law, citizenship can be revoked under specific circumstances such as fraud or lying on immigration forms, or if a person has served in an enemy foreign army.
