Over 43 Million Worldwide Are Blind - Plateau Health Commissioner

The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, has reported that over 43 million people are blind worldwide, with cataracts responsible for 55% of these cases.

He shared this information during the annual World Sight Day celebration in Jos on Friday, with the theme “Love Your Eyes Kids”, supported by partners including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), HANDS, Sightsavers, Brien Holden, and Standard Chartered.

Dr Shurkuk explained that 77% of those affected by blindness live in low and middle-income countries, with Nigeria and Plateau State included. He noted that the 2023 Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey showed a 2.7% blindness prevalence rate in Plateau State, which is significantly higher than the national rate of 0.7%.

The commissioner pointed out that cataracts and glaucoma are the main causes of blindness, but these conditions are largely preventable. He emphasised the importance of sight in empowering individuals and communities, and the state’s commitment to eye health.

According to Dr Shurkuk, Plateau State has made notable progress by establishing a strong network of eye care services, equipping referral centres, training eye care professionals, conducting community screenings, and collaborating with partners to strengthen the eye care system.

He urged residents to prioritise eye health by getting regular check-ups and supporting those with visual impairments.

Dr Shurkuk reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring everyone can experience the world’s beauty, calling for a future where vision is cherished and blindness is avoided.

Representatives from CBM and Sightsavers, including Dr Nanshep Gabgab and Abalis Dasat, also expressed their commitment to raising awareness and supporting eye health initiatives in Plateau State.
