At least 73 migrants heading to Europe are missing and thought dead after their ship capsized off the coast of Libya, according to the United Nations migration agency on Wednesday.

According to the International Organization for Migration, the wreck occurred on Tuesday, and Libyan police have recovered at least 11 bodies.

According to the United Nations, seven migrants survived the catastrophe and made it to Libyan shores in very poor conditions.  were rushed to the hospital.

The catastrophe on Tuesday was the latest maritime tragedy in the central Mediterranean, a major migration route. Libya has recently emerged as the primary transit route for migrants from Africa and the Middle East attempting to reach Europe.
