The Oyo State Government plans to establish the Oyo State Flood Management Agency in a strategic move to combat flooding statewide. Governor Seyi Makinde has submitted the Oyo State Flood Management Agency Bill, 2024, to the State House of Assembly for review, stating the initiative comes as the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP) nears its end.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin led the bill’s first reading in the House, commending the decision to form a permanent body dedicated to flood control and prevention.
Governor Makinde emphasised the importance of creating a sustainable solution, “The new Agency will build upon the existing efforts of IUFMP, which has been working to develop a long-term flood risk management framework for Ibadan since 2014.”
“This proactive approach will safeguard our communities and infrastructure from the devastating effects of flooding,“ he said. He added that the new agency would leverage the infrastructure and expertise developed by IUFMP to create a more extensive flood prevention framework.
Lawmakers across the House voiced support, expressing optimism that the agency would bring lasting flood relief to residents across Oyo State.
