Esther Nworgu has earned Nigeria’s second medal at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris, claiming the Silver in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting event.
Following a disappointing Olympic performance by Team Nigeria, the Paralympic team has stepped up to restore national pride with impressive medal-winning performances.
On Wednesday, Esther set two new Paralympic records with lifts of 112kg and 118kg in her final two attempts. However, China’s Zhe Cui narrowly edged her out, setting a new Paralympic record with a 119kg lift to win Gold.
Esther’s path to the Silver began with a 106kg lift, placing her in second behind Cui, who started with 108kg. In her second lift, Nworgu lifted 112kg, but Cui maintained her lead with a 113kg lift. In the final round, Nworgu’s 118kg lift secured her Silver, while Brazil’s Lara de Lima took Bronze with a 109kg lift.
Esther’s achievement is a testament to her skill and determination, marking a significant moment for Nigeria at the Games.
