The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal, originally awarded to United States gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Games will now be given to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu.
This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which found that the appeal filed by the USA Gymnastics team regarding Chiles’ score was submitted after the one-minute deadline.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has reinstated Chiles’ original score of 13.666 and adjusted Bărbosu’s score of 13.700 to place her in third position. As a result, Chiles will lose her bronze medal, which will be reallocated to Bărbosu.
The IOC confirmed that they will work with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Romania to organise the reallocation ceremony and will also coordinate with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) regarding the return of Chiles’ medal.
“Following the CAS decision with regard to the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the amendment of the ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romania),” the IOC said in the statement.
“We are in touch with the NOC of Romania to discuss the reallocation ceremony and with USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.”
Following the ruling, CNN reached out to the USOPC and USA Gymnastics to enquire about a possible appeal, but USA Gymnastics has expressed its disappointment with the decision.
The competition had concluded with Chiles initially securing a bronze medal after her score was adjusted, leading to a memorable moment when Chiles and her fellow American gymnast Simone Biles appeared on the podium alongside gold medalist Rebeca Andrade.
Chiles has since taken to Instagram to express her frustration, announcing that she will be taking a break from social media for her mental health.
