In an unexpected turn of events, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, one of the aspirants vying for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo state, has chosen to step back from the fray just ahead of the eagerly anticipated primaries slated for Saturday.
Breaking the news during a press briefing held in Benin, the bustling capital of Edo State, on Friday, Ize-Iyamu expressed the difficulty of his decision, underscoring the extensive consultations undertaken with close confidants, familial ties, and political allies.
While bidding adieu to the race, he pledged his unwavering support to any contender emerging victorious from Saturday’s crucial primary contest.
In a gesture of appreciation, Ize-Iyamu extended gratitude to President Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC, lauding their impartiality and dedication to upholding the principles of democracy.
“I entered the contest as a progressive democrat with an open mind to keenly contest and accept the result of a process that is fair, credible, and transparent,” Ize-Iyamu stated. He further expressed acknowledgment for the commendable efforts exerted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC in dispelling unfounded allegations regarding the disqualification of certain aspirants, including himself, from the gubernatorial race.
He emphasised, saying, “The NWC constituted the authentic screening committee, and all twelve aspirants who purchased and completed the nomination forms were successfully screened and subsequently issued clearance certificates.”
Yet, despite being granted the green light to contest, Ize-Iyamu iterated his heartfelt decision to withdraw from the race. “Although painful, this decision has become imperative after an exhaustive consultation with my family, friends, political associates, and supporters,” he confessed.
His departure, he asserted, was motivated by a fervent desire for the APC’s cohesion and harmony, both at the state and national echelons. In a humble plea to the discerning populace of Edo State, Ize-Iyamu beseeched understanding for his deeply personal choice, assuring continual dedication to their welfare.
Acknowledging the key role played by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the party’s leadership, Ize-Iyamu concluded his address with a nod to their unwavering commitment to the democratic ethos.
With Ize-Iyamu’s exit altering the landscape, the APC now braces itself with eleven remaining aspirants poised to contend in Saturday’s primaries. Among them stand notable figures such as Dennis Idahosa, Clem Agba, Monday Okpebholo, Lucky Imasuen, Anamero Dekeri, Gideon Ikhine, Col. David Imuse, retired Major Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, Oserheimen Osunbor, Blessing Agbomhere, and Ernest Umakhihe, each vying for the gubernatorial mantle.
