President Paul Kagame on Sunday afternoon welcomed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, who was in Rwanda on business.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the regional security situation and strategies to further deepen bilateral ties between Rwanda and Guinea-Bissau.

On November 8, the two leaders met in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, on the margins of the COP27 United Nations Climate Conference to discuss bilateral relations.

President Embaló recently paid a business visit to Rwanda in August. This time, he paid a 3-day state visit to further bilateral ties.

Along with President Kagame, they were present when the foreign ministers of the two nations signed MoUs for economic and trade cooperation, education, tourism, business events, and environmental conservation.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which President Kagame said offers many opportunities for constructive engagement with one another while at the same time working together to address transnational issues that affect countries, was a topic of discussion between the two leaders during their visit.

“Joining forces, and learning from one another, can only make us much stronger.” President Kagame said.

Embaló noted that the distance between Rwanda and Guinea-Bissau isn’t long as it seems and that there are more opportunities to explore in terms of cooperation that can benefit the people and economies of the two countries.

President Embaló is a political scientist and military officer who previously served as prime minister between November 18, 2016 and January 16, 2018.
