PDP Halt LG Campaign in Akwa Ibom Over Death of Gov’s Wife

Edo PDP Rejects Election Results, Calls for Re-Collation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State has suspended its political campaign for the upcoming local elections following the passing of the state’s First Lady, Patience Eno.

With local elections scheduled for October 26, various political parties had been actively canvassing for support. However, the PDP announced its decision to halt campaign activities out of respect for the late First Lady.

In a statement released on Friday morning, Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Emembong, confirmed that Mrs. Eno passed away on Thursday after battling an undisclosed illness.

“She passed away peacefully in the hospital on September 26, 2024, surrounded by her family,” the statement read.

“The family accepts the will of the Almighty and requests prayers and support from well-wishers during this challenging time. Further details will be provided by the family as needed. Meanwhile, the family kindly asks for privacy as they mourn their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.”

Governor Umo Eno expressed his gratitude to all those who have supported the first family during this difficult time and assured citizens that despite the personal loss, his commitment to serving the state remains steadfast.

In a separate statement, PDP Publicity Secretary Edwin Ebiese announced the suspension of the party’s campaign activities, saying, “This heartbreaking news has plunged our party, and indeed the entire state, into mourning.”

“As we try to come to terms with this profound loss, we feel it is necessary to pause our campaign activities in honor of the departed First Lady. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the understanding of our supporters and the public.”

The PDP extended its deepest condolences to Governor Umo Eno, his family, the government, and the people of Akwa Ibom, wishing them strength to bear the irreparable loss.
