PDP Summons Emergency Meeting Over Mass Defections

As defections mount, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called an emergency NWC meeting for Tuesday. This decision comes in the wake of defections from notable party members, including former Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire PDP structure in Delta State, which has historically been one of the party’s key strongholds.

The anticipated defections have plunged the PDP into one of its most profound crises. With several lawmakers having already departed from the National Assembly—most recently Oluwole Oke, a five-time member of the House of Representatives from Osun State—additional losses could further erode the party’s support in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

A senior party official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the agenda for Tuesday’s NWC meeting will centre on the escalating trend of defections and strategies to reverse the party’s downturn.

The PDP has struggled with ongoing internal conflicts both before and after the 2023 elections.

Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has faced increasing criticism since succeeding former Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, while disagreements regarding the National Secretary role have further divided the National Working Committee (NWC).
