The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the National Assembly to reject the proposed 2025 budget, labelling it as “anti-people” and insufficiently focused on Nigeria’s economic recovery.
Debo Ologunagba, the party’s spokesperson, criticised the N49.7 trillion budget presented by President Bola Tinubu, describing the accompanying address as “campaign rhetoric laced with unsubstantiated economic statistics.”
The budget, titled “Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace and Rebuilding Prosperity,” includes a revenue target of N34.82 trillion, with N15.81 trillion allocated for debt servicing. Tinubu projected inflation to drop from 34.6% to 15% and the exchange rate to improve to N1,500 per US dollar.
The PDP, however, dismissed these projections as “voodoo economics,” arguing that the budget lacks tangible provisions for investments in the productive sector, which are critical for economic growth.
The opposition party called on the National Assembly to exercise its constitutional powers to amend the budget and include measures aimed at reducing the cost of living, creating jobs, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.
It also criticised the president’s claims of economic improvement, pointing to ongoing hardship, infrastructure decay, and high unemployment and inflation rates.
The PDP urged lawmakers to prioritise the well-being of Nigerians by rejecting the current proposal and introducing a more people-centred budget.
