Jose Peseiro, the head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has revealed the final 25-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, named Côte d’Ivoire 2023.
Nigeria finds itself in Group A alongside hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. The official Super Eagles X handle posted the 25-man squad on Friday.
Captain Ahmed Musa makes a return to the squad after being excluded from the starting games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. The goalkeeper lineup includes South Africa-based Stanley Nwabili, along with Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo.
Peseiro’s selection comprises three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders, and eight forwards. Notable names on the list include African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, Ahmed Musa, Victor Boniface, Moses Simon, and Samuel Chukwueze.
Other key players in the squad are Wilfred Ndidi, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Francis Uzoho, Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Kenneth Omeruo, Ademola Lookman, Umar Sadiq, among others.
The entire squad is set to depart from their current bases on Tuesday, 2nd January 2024, heading to Abu Dhabi, UAE, for a one-week training camp lasting until Tuesday, 9th January. Following this, the team will return to Lagos on the same day and then travel to the Ivorian capital, Abidjan, on Wednesday, 10th January.
Nigeria, a three-time AFCON winner, embarks on its quest for a fourth title, kicking off the campaign against Equatorial Guinea in their Group A opener. The Super Eagles have a rich history in the tournament, being champions as hosts in 1980, victorious in Tunisia in 1994, and crowned winners in South Africa in 2013.
