Phones That Will No Longer Support WhatsApp in 2025

As the New Year begins, WhatsApp’s latest changes bring new challenges for users who rely on older smartphones. With updates to the app’s compatibility, some devices will no longer be able to support WhatsApp.

The number of people affected will not be particularly large: only those with enough technical know-how to have kept their devices running for over 10 years need to be concerned. However, if you’re using a phone that old, it’s worth reading on to check if it’s on the list.

The first compatibility update will occur on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp will stop supporting Android’s KitKat OS and any older versions.

Some users with KitKat on their phones will still be able to use WhatsApp, provided their device can be upgraded to a newer operating system.

However, there are several older phone models that no longer receive official updates from their manufacturers.

As a result, these devices cannot be upgraded to a more recent OS unless the user attempts certain DIY modifications, which would void the phone’s warranty and insurance and could even risk ‘bricking’ it—rendering it completely inoperable.

Here is a list of Android phones known to be affected by the January 1 change at the time of publishing:

    • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
    • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
    • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
    • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
    • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has stated that these changes are part of regular updates designed to ensure the app remains secure and functional while being compatible with newer devices. Later in 2025, WhatsApp will also stop supporting iPhones of a similar age.

From 5 May, the app will no longer work on iOS versions earlier than 15.1.

While some iPhone users with older iOS versions can simply update their devices, others, which are still in use, can only be upgraded to iOS 12.5.7.

The phones affected in this category, which can still use WhatsApp now but will no longer be able to from 5 May, include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

These changes will impact both the standard WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, both of which share the same system requirements.
