Pitso Mosimane was in tears after he received a cold welcoming in Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarterfinal clash against Al Ahly.
Mosimane, a coaching hero of the club who won a CAF Champions League and the Premier Soccer League for the team, couldn’t contain his emotions as he spoke with the Press after a 3-1 aggregate win against his former team.
The former Bafana Bafana coach joined Al Ahly mid 2020 and led the Egyptian giants to an elusive 9th CAF Champions League and Ahly’s first in seven years.
After defeating his former team 2-0 in Egypt, the Al Ahly team received a hostile reception in the hands of section of the fans of Sundowns. Mosimane and his mother was sworn at and placards were raised with inscriptions of unprintable words against his name. The team needed a heavy security presence to move out of the stadium.
Mosimane, emotional at his Press Conference said he received insulting emails also and was left disappointed at how he was treated.
Mosimane said he remembered the first time he came with Mamelodi Sundowns to play against SuperSport United and how emotional he was because he spent seven years at SuperSport United but had to move on.
He said he deserved to be showed more respect by the fans and the team for what he did for the club.
Al Ahly have qualified for the semifinal of Africa’s biggest football club competition for the 17th time and will face Esperance Sportive de Tunis.
