The faction of Afenifere led by Pa Ayo Adebanjo has voiced its support for the upcoming protest set for August 1.
Justice Faloye, Afenifere’s publicity secretary, stated in an interview with Arise TV that the group informed the federal government about the consequences of their economic policies on Nigerians.
Faloye’s remarks came following the scheduled nationwide protest on August 1.
The Nigerian government and President Bola Tinubu have encouraged the youngsters to call off their planned demonstration against growing living costs.
Faloye stated that the planned demonstration was motivated by the country’s economic predicament, which he attributed to the Tinubu-led government’s actions.
The group’s spokeswoman stated that Tinubu’s plans are “superficial” and cannot alleviate the country’s difficulties.
He noted that the planned demonstration is a “organic reaction” to the Tinubu administration’s economic policies.
“Afenifere is not planning to be a part of the protest, but we support anybody who wants to express their fundamental human rights,” she stated.
“We, in Afenifere, have been warning about economic policies, and if they continue, you will be unable to stop people.
“We have shown you from the outset that you have taken the incorrect road. Afenifere has expressed the necessity for economic and political transformation.
“All we have are palliatives and cosmetic actions that won’t solve anything. “We recognise that the protest is an organic reaction.”
He urged the federal government to allow demonstrators to express themselves, noting that when the government attempts to suppress a protest, it typically turns violent.
