Plateau Governor Imposes Curfew on Jos to Quell Protests

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has declared a 24-hour curfew in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis starting from midnight on Sunday, August 4th, 2024.

The statement, signed by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs, conveyed the governor’s directive. It stated that after assessing the actions of unscrupulous individuals who took advantage of the nationwide protest to terrorise innocent citizens in the affected areas, the governor arrived at the decision in consultation with state security agencies.

Despite the peaceful behaviour of the demonstrators during the four-day street protests, certain individuals wielding dangerous weapons unlawfully entered several shops and restaurants along Bauchi road and Zololo junction in Jos North local government area looting food items and other valuables before security agencies intervened to prevent the criminal activity from degenerating.

“The peaceful conduct of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is commendable. I urge everyone to continue to uphold this culture of peace as we work together to build a united and progressive plateau,” Governor Mutfwang added.
