According to South African police, two individuals have been detained in connection with the weekend shootings at a tavern that claimed about 19 lives.

Police do not believe that the shootings in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, and Soweto, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people and four more, are connected.

Nine others were injured during the random shooting incident at the tavern located in Nomzamo informal settlement.

The police minister, Bheki Cele, got a briefing on the horrific shootings on Monday as the arrests were announced.

In a statement, the police assured that the arrest of the two linked to the Pietermaritzburg shooting was “a first step of bringing to book all those who orchestrated one of the country’s bloodiest weekends”.

According to the police, a portion of its reaction team had been sent to Soweto to help with policing in response to community needs.

It happens while the government is under pressure to identify those responsible for the killings, and the police are accused of not doing enough to safeguard the populace.

The rate of crime in the South African nation is among the highest in the world.

It should be recalled that at least 17 people were found dead in an East London, South African nightclub on June 25, 2022.

The people who died at the nightclub were according to local reports aged between 18 and 20.
