On Friday night, a police anti-bomb squad deactivated an improvised explosive device hidden near a basic healthcare institution in Maiduguri.
Around midnight, neighbours near Mala Kachalla General Hospital discovered an IED near the federal low-cost along Baga Road.
According to an eyewitness, the IED did not explode because it was detected in time.
The police anti-bomb squad was contacted, and the device was deactivated with no injuries.
“We discovered a bomb hidden near Mala Hospital about midnight. We summoned the police anti-bomb team, which mobilised and was at the scene very once, but they were unable to disable the device until around 3 a.m.,” said an eyewitness.
The source of the bomb has yet to be determined.
An IED that had been planted at Zajeri Primary School on Baga Road was discovered about a week ago.
This incident comes a month after multiple explosions killed thirty-six people in Gwoza town, and a day after the military raised an alarm about the increased use of IEDs by Boko Haram terrorists to cause havoc.
According to Acting GOC 7Div Maimalari Cantonment, Brig. Gen. Abubakar Haruna, the military is intensifying awareness campaigns on the threats of IEDs within the Maiduguri metropolis and Jere.
Brig. Gen. Haruna stated that the terrorists have resorted to using IEDs because of their effectiveness and ease of detonation. He urged the general public to be vigilant and to alert the military if they see any suspicious objects in the area.
