Police Investigate Lawmaker Ikwechegh for Assault on Bolt Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, and making disrespectful remarks about the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

FCT police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh confirmed in a statement on Monday that the incident was reported at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude towards the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement,” Adeh said.

Adeh said Ikwechegh is currently being questioned at the Maitama Police Station.

“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” she said, adding that FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a full investigation into the incident.

The police assured the public that they will carry out a fair investigation and take appropriate legal action once inquiries are completed.
