Police in Ogun State‘s Olodo Community of Odeda Local Government Area have detained a 20-year-old man on suspicion of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl.
The suspect, Akeem Sumonu, was apprehended on Tuesday by operatives stationed at the community’s security post.
Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, revealed this in a statement to journalists on Thursday in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The survivor’s mother, named only as Christiana, told police that the suspect reportedly forcefully attacked and raped her daughter in October 2024, then threatened her to keep the incident hidden.
According to the source, the adolescent kept the incident hidden owing to the terror induced in her by the suspect until her mother discovered peculiar changes in her behaviour and injuries sustained as a result of the alleged crime.
“The victim hid the incident from her parents until the complainant noticed unusual signs on her body,” she told me.
“She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone.”
The suspect was claimed to have confessed to the crime while being interrogated by operatives.
The police spokesperson stated that the survivor’s medical report revealed she was eight weeks pregnant, which is suspected to be related to the alleged act.
The suspect has been arrested and detained, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
