Separatist militant group Polisario has executed a fresh attack on the Southern regions of North African country Morocco.
According to reports, the military group launched about four explosive missiles at the southern region on Friday night.
Polisario attacked the city of Aousserd, which is located in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region of Morocco.
The strike creates a reminder of a similar strike in the province of Es-Semara in October.
No material or human casualties were reported since the strike occurred in the “Araqib Oued Essar” area, some six kilometres away from residential areas.
According to reports, individuals from the UN peacekeeping force in Western Sahara (MINURSO) as well as members of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and Gendarmerie visited the scene of the explosive projectiles to evaluate the situation.
Moroccan officials have not yet released information about the incident or the missiles’ place of origin, but tensions are on the rise as these activities mirror past Polisario Front attacks in the same area.
On October 29, attacks that targeted many residential locations in Es-Semara resulted in the death of one person and three others being injured.
Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (U.N.), Omar Hilale, has promised that his government would take the appropriate action against Polisario who took credit for the attack.
“Morocco is a law-abiding country. At this moment, we are in the investigative phase, collecting information,” Hilale said.
He emphasised that Morocco is merely awaiting the definitive findings of the ongoing investigations and is not levelling any accusations.
Laayoune, Es-Semara, Dakhka, and other southern provinces of Morocco have also seen a rise in protests by locals who want answers for the Es-Semara attack.
In announcements released in recent months, the Polisario group has continuously claimed credit for several attacks on Morocco’s southern areas.
These proclamations frequently followed military actions and diplomatic visits.
However, Moroccan officials have not reacted to Polisario’s claims, despite its repeated assertions.
