The main political parties in Guinea-Bissau, including President Umaro Sissocó Embaló’s party, have joined forces to demand the President respect the country’s laws and human rights.
The coalition, comprising the Platform of Inclusive Alliance — Terra Ranka (PAI-TR) and the Forum for the Salvation of Democracy (FSD), issued a joint declaration expressing deep concern over the nation’s escalating political and social tensions.
The declaration, signed by Domingos Simões Pereira, President of PAI-TR, and Nuno Gomes Nabiam, General Coordinator of the FSD, highlights the “persistent instability of democratic institutions, disregard for fundamental rights, and repression of freedoms” under the current administration.
The coalition accuses President Embaló of direct interference in the internal affairs of political parties and of attempting to undermine the country’s democratic foundations.
It warned that the President’s continued disregard for democratic norms could lead to further unrest, stating, “The insistence of the President of the Republic on not respecting the rules of the democratic game may cement his role as a disruptive element of the democratic process.” They also called for the Supreme Court to uphold the rule of law and demanded the withdrawal of military forces stationed in Parliament to allow the resumption of its functions.
In their declaration, the parties made it clear that they would resort to “legal and democratic” means, including popular demonstrations, to restore constitutional legality if their demands were not met. The coalition also stressed the importance of adhering to the electoral calendar, particularly with the presidential elections scheduled as President Embaló’s term ends on February 27, 2025.
The situation in Guinea-Bissau remains tense as the political landscape grows increasingly fraught with uncertainty. The coalition’s call for unity and respect for democratic principles reflects the growing concerns over the future of democracy in the country.
