Portugal Steps in to Help Mozambique Battle Rising Insurgency

Mozambique has been assured of support from Portugal in its fight against militants.

Portugal on Friday said it will help its colony overcome rise in militant groups at Cabo Delgado- a region of Mozambique bordered by Tanzania.

The region is also home to an an abundance of natural gas, in the tune of $60bn.

“What we are going to do is to support Mozambican authorities so that they can exercise their sovereignty,” Portuguese Defence Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho revealed during a trip to the country.

Mozambique has long sought the help of the European Union in tackling the militants.

The United States has also linked the rise in militancy in the country to a well organised team of terrorists under the authority of Islamic State.

The U.S. says it will show support to Maputo by recognising militancy in the country as a global threat.

Militancy and terrorism have been marked as some of Africa’s biggest challenges with many countries facing the problem at the moment.
