Liverpool soared to the top of the Premier League standings with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, while Manchester United were left frustrated by a goalless draw against Crystal Palace. Nicolas Jackson starred for Chelsea with two goals in a 3-0 triumph against West Ham, while Aston Villa kept pace at the top with a 3-1 comeback win over Wolves.
Liverpool’s Strong Response
Liverpool, still reeling from a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest last week, bounced back emphatically. Luis Diaz, rested midweek during Liverpool’s Champions League win at AC Milan, returned to the starting lineup and scored twice within minutes.
Diaz capitalised on a defensive error by Kepa Arrizabalaga to open the scoring and soon after added a second, expertly set up by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Darwin Nunez, starting for the first time this season, ended his 14-game scoring drought with a stunning strike into the far corner.
The three-goal win propelled Liverpool above Manchester City and Aston Villa on goal difference, with all three teams tied on 12 points, and City having a game at hand.
Manchester United’s Premier League Struggles Continue
Manchester United’s trip to Selhurst Park ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side with only two wins from their first five league games. United were saved by goalkeeper Andre Onana, who produced a brilliant double save to deny Eddie Nketiah and Ismaila Sarr.
Manager Erik ten Hag lamented his team’s failure to capitalize on chances, saying, “Onana’s save was brilliant, but we should have been more clinical.”
Chelsea and Villa Shine
Nicolas Jackson’s brace powered Chelsea to a 3-0 win over West Ham, continuing Chelsea’s solid start under manager Enzo Maresca. The Senegalese striker now has four goals in five Premier League matches. Jackson also assisted Cole Palmer, who scored early in the second half to round off the win.
Aston Villa also secured their fourth victory in five matches, coming from behind to beat Wolves 3-1. Matheus Cunha put Wolves ahead, but goals from Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, and substitute Jhon Duran secured the win for Villa.
Other Premier League Highlights
Tottenham eased pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou with a 3-1 win over Brentford, while Fulham picked up a 3-1 victory against Newcastle. Ipswich scored a late equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw against fellow newly-promoted side Southampton. Meanwhile, Everton and Leicester remain winless after a 1-1 draw.
The Premier League action will continue on Sunday with a highly anticipated clash between champions Manchester City and Arsenal, the two teams who finished first and second last season.
