The Presidency and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have clashed over an upcoming ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest.
The protest against economic hardship, which has gained pace on social media, is set to take place in all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August.
Prices for food and necessities have surged in recent months, causing Nigerians to face one of the greatest inflation and economic crises in the nation. This crisis has been brought on by the government’s dual policy of eliminating fuel subsidies and consolidating forex windows.
The Nigerian government has sent out alerts of the scheduled protest through the Nigeria Police Force, the House of Representatives, and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Onanuga Accuses LP
Obi Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Saturday accused the Labour Party and Obi of being the masterminds of the protest aimed at drawing the attention of President Bola Tinubu to the current economic situation in the country.
“Don’t be misled: the malcontents organising statewide rallies are supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s failed presidential candidate. And he should be held accountable for any problems caused by the relocation,” Onanuga stated in an X post on Saturday.
