President Abdel El-Sisi, Extends State of Emergency in Egypt

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has announced another three-month extension of a nationwide state of emergency starting on Sunday.

It is the sixteenth extension of the state of emergency since it came into effect on April 10, 2017, a day after attacks on two Coptic churches on Palm Sunday killed at least 44 people.

This decision was published in Sunday’s issue of the official Egyptian gazette. The decree can be seen as a measure taken due to the “serious security and health conditions the country is going through.”

According to the statement on the executive order, state of emergency is necessary in the country so as to allow the Egyptian armed forces and the police to take “necessary measures to combat the dangers of terrorism and its financing, protect public and private property” and violators will face imprisonment.
