President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has engaged in bilateral discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an effort to strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Canada.
Canada was among the first countries to recognise Ghana’s independence in 1957, and shortly thereafter, it launched its first bilateral development program in Africa in Ghana.
Attending the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey, President Nana Akufo-Addo wrote on his Facebook page, “On Sunday, May 7, 2023, I held bilateral discussions with His Excellency Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of the Government of Canada, in London.”
Our discussions centered on strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between Ghana and Canada.
Canada and Ghana collaborate in multilateral fora such as the Commonwealth, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), International Criminal Court (ICC), and United Nations (UN) to develop effective responses to the most pressing global challenges of the present day.
The two nations have also worked effectively together to advance the agendas of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Over the past six decades, Canada is said to have provided over $2.5 billion in development assistance to Ghana in support of shared Canadian and Ghanaian priorities.
This has aided Ghana’s efforts to improve agricultural systems, livelihoods, and food security, especially in the north’s impoverished rural communities.
Canada continues to provide substantial development assistance in accordance with Ghana’s “Ghana Beyond Aid” strategy and Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, which totaled $94.09 million during fiscal year 2020-2021.
In addition, the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives provides assistance to local Ghanaian organizations and initiatives that promote inclusive governance, diversity, democracy, and human rights, as well as women’s participation in peace and security efforts.
