President Bazoum Appoints Former Chief of Staff as Prime Minister

Niger’s newly inaugurated President, Mohammed Bazoum has appointed former Minister and his predecessor’s Chief of Staff as the country’s new Prime Minister.

Bazoum’s announcement of a Prime Minister has come barely twenty-four hours after his inauguration.

Ohoumoudou Mahamadou’s appointment as PM was announced on Saturday on national television.

He was named Chief of Staff in 2015, having held the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2011 and 2012. He first held a Ministerial position in the Mines Ministry in 1991.

The new President was at the centre of Niger’s first democratic transition since its independence in 1960. Despite threats of a coup attempt, the new President was sworn-in with Nigeriens hopeful of better days amid the multitudes of challenges being faced by the country.
