President Muhammadu Buhari is departing Abuja today, Thursday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to participate in the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, AU.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement, said Buhari will participate in three high-level meetings while he is in Addis Ababa.
The theme of the AU Summit is “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation.”
Buhari will participate in three “High level meetings on peace and security, climate change and the political situation in some West African countries.”
Buhari’s Media Aide, Garba Shehu, has announced that President Buhari will attend several meetings during his visit to Addis Ababa. The first meeting will be the Peace and Security Council (PSC) chaired by the President of South Africa.
This meeting will address the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The second meeting is the Committee of the Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), which is currently chaired by the President of Niger Republic.
Additionally, Buhari will attend an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and the Government of ECOWAS on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the AU. During these events, Buhari will deliver remarks and present his National Statement at the opening session of the Summit.
The Summit will bring together leaders from the AU member countries as well as a number of non-AU countries and international institutions accredited to the AU in Addis Ababa.
Buhari will be accompanied on the trip by some Ministers and other top government officials and is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, February 20.
This is coming when Nigerians have been groaning under the scarcity of Naira notes.
