The Vice President of Iran has received assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigeria is willing to improve current ties with the Islamic Republic.

President Buhari stated this after a courtesy visit from Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri on the margins of the UN Conference taking place in Doha, the capital city of the State of Qatar.

The President said; “I have interacted with Iranians over many years especially when I was the Petroleum Minister and understand the country and its people.

“I therefore welcome the strengthening of relations between our countries, as we have complementarities, especially in energy production.”

In addition, President Buhari informed his guest that a new President would take office in less than three months as a result of the recent election in Nigeria. He hoped that the next administration will maintain the solid ties he had established between the two nations.

The Iranian Vice President expressed his pleasure at meeting with the President of Nigeria and expressed his full awareness of the necessity for cooperation between the two countries in other fields, such as agriculture, given their abundant natural resources and human capital.

Mansouri emphasised that as leaders in their respective regions, it was crucial for the two countries to push for multilateralism to be the rule of the day and prevent a unipolar world as Iran is currently subject to international sanctions over nuclear and other issues. He added that the best course of action is to establish and strengthen a joint commission between the two countries at the highest levels.
