President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sympathy to the families of the victims of the tragedy that occurred in Lagos State as a result of a collision between a moving railway and a transit bus carrying government employees.
According to reports, there were 85 people riding the bus in total; the majority of them suffered varied degrees of injury, and six people were later pronounced dead.
The President expressed condolences for the accident involving a train and a Lagos State BRT staff bus on Thursday in the Shogunle neighbourhood of Ikeja in a message released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
Buhari was cited as stating, “The accident at the level crossing between the train and the BRT staff bus is distressing and Extremely sad.” in response to the event.
“I pray for the souls of the deceased and quick recovery of the many who were injured.”
The President commended the Lagos State authorities and Federal Government agencies for promptly getting involved in relief work.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the recently completed presidential election, has expressed sympathy to the families of those killed in a railway and bus disaster that occurred in Lagos on Thursday morning while carrying government employees.
Obi responded to the situation on Twitter on Thursday night, saying that such “avoidable” mishaps should always be prevented.
The former governor of Anambra State called such instances tragic and encouraged relevant agencies and authorities to take responsibility for their actions.
Also, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has expressed sympathy to the Lagos state administration for the Thursday morning rail and bus tragedy.
He said; “The unfortunate crash of a train and a BRT bus in Lagos this morning is sad news not only to Lagosians but to all of us Nigerians, as is any mishap anywhere. My condolences to the families and friends of the victims and the good people and government of Lagos.”
President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also sympathised with the families of victims of the Ikeja train accident in Lagos State.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the victims and families affected by the gory incident involving a train and a bus in the Ikeja area of Lagos State earlier today,” Tinubu tweeted.
