President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi has gone into mandatory isolation after testing positive for Covid-19.
A statement from the presidency said that the mandatory isolation was a precautionary measure in accordance with Botswana’s health protocols and while he is away, Deputy President Slumber Tshogwane will act in his position until further notice.
Botswana recently became one of only six African countries that have achieved the year-end target of fully vaccinating 40 per cent of its people.
The other five African countries that have met the goal set in May by the World Health Assembly are Seychelles, Mauritius, Morocco, Tunisia and Cape Verde.
As of October 8, 2021, Botswana recorded a total of 179,220 cases of coronavirus (COVID-19). As of the same date, Botswana registered 2,368 mortalities and 174,549 recoveries. Botswana registered its highest daily count on August 2, 2021, with 8,530 cases.
