Kenya’s President, William Ruto, has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating fire at Hillside Endarasha Academy, a private boarding school, where 17 pupils tragically lost their lives. He described the incident as “horrific and devastating” and has ordered a full investigation to determine the cause.

“We pray for a speedy recovery for the survivors,” Ruto stated on social media. “I have directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic event. Those found responsible will be held accountable.”

Hillside Endarasha Academy is located in the Central Highlands of Kenya, 150 km (93 miles) north of Nairobi, and caters to approximately 800 children between the ages of 6 and 14.

He also assured the public that the government, through the Ministry of Interior and Coordination, is mobilising resources to support the affected families.

A team of investigators has been deployed to the scene, according to the police, who confirmed that the cause of the fire is still unknown. Police spokesperson Resila Onyango informed AFP that the bodies recovered were “burnt beyond recognition” and warned that more could be found as the investigation continues.

The school has been cordoned off, and Kenya Red Cross, along with a multi-agency response team, is providing psychological support to pupils, teachers, and families.
