President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has urged religious and traditional leaders to collaborate closely with the government in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities in the country.
During a Ramadan Iftar gathering with traditional rulers and religious leaders at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasised the vital role of religious leaders in shaping public opinion and fostering unity among citizens. He called on them to refrain from vilifying or denigrating the nation in their sermons.
President Tinubu expressed his administration’s determination to transform Nigeria’s challenges into opportunities for prosperity. He stressed that no terrorist group can overcome the collective will of Nigerians, regardless of their efforts to prey on innocent citizens.
Addressing the religious leaders, President Tinubu urged them to offer constructive criticism of elected officials, depicting the importance of patience and national unity. He affirmed the need to nurture the love for the nation and to refrain from condemning Nigeria in sermons, citing a Yoruba proverb urging to preserve what is precious.
Acknowledging the birthday wishes extended to him on March 29, 2024, coinciding with Good Friday, President Tinubu prayed for the safety and well-being of all attendees and their families.
Various speakers at the event expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come together during Ramadan to share a meal with the President and strengthen the bonds of friendship that unite the nation.
Vice President Kashim Shettima highlighted the crucial roles of religious and traditional leaders in promoting peace and unity, urging them to bridge ethnic and religious divides.
Representing the Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, assured President Tinubu of the unwavering support of traditional rulers and commended the government’s efforts to address food price hikes and security challenges.
Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, Emir of Zazzau, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), stated the significance of Ramadan as a period of reflection and unity, expressing optimism for the country’s return to peace and stability.
Apostle Samson Fatokun, General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), praised President Tinubu for fostering a harmonious relationship between the state and the church and pledged continued support for his administration’s efforts to address security challenges.
