President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the acquisition of 12 attack helicopters, a crucial step towards the operationalisation of the Nigerian Army Aviation.
Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, made this announcement during the Maiden Nigerian Army Aviation Seminar, which took place from September 25th to 28th, 2023, at the Command Officer’s Mess in Abuja.
General Taoreed expressed his appreciation to President Tinubu for endorsing this initiative, emphasising that it signifies a historic moment for the Nigerian Army. He also commended the proactive and adaptive leadership of the Nigerian Army.
The primary objective of Army Aviation is to enhance the agility, responsiveness, and overall effectiveness of ground troops. It aims to contribute significantly to the operational success of joint and coalition forces.
General Lagbaja, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the distinct roles of the Nigerian Army Aviation and the Air Force. While the Air Force undertakes larger missions with strategic implications, the unit specialises in tactical and operational engagements, providing crucial support to forces on the ground.
General Lagbaja further revealed that the Nigerian Army has made remarkable progress in training pilots, aircraft engineers, technicians, and other essential ground support personnel. Recognising the technical complexities of aviation, the Army has also sought mentorship, including international collaborations, and has submitted its fledgling aviation outfit to the guidance of the Nigerian Air Force.
This significant step towards the acquisition of helicopters traces its roots back to the re-establishment of the Nigerian Army Aviation Coordination Office in December 2014.
The seminar witnessed the presence of notable figures, including former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. LEO Irabor (rtd), who serves as the first Coordinator of the Aviation Establishment. Also in attendance were Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, as well as representatives from sister Services, security agencies, and retired military officers.
