President Tinubu Emphasises National Interest in New Year Address

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu affirms that every decision made during his tenure since assuming office on May 29, 2023, has been guided by the best interests of Nigeria. President Tinubu made this assurance during his New Year broadcast to citizens on January 1st.

Acknowledging the challenging seven months of his administration, President Tinubu highlighted the necessity of difficult decisions taken to avert fiscal catastrophe. Notably, he mentioned the removal of the long-standing fuel subsidy, which had been a financial burden on the country for over four decades. Another crucial decision involved loosening the grip of a select few on the foreign exchange system, aiming to benefit a broader spectrum of the population.

President Tinubu acknowledged the discomfort these decisions may have caused, recognising the ongoing conversations and debates surrounding the rising cost of living, inflation exceeding 28%, and an unacceptable high underemployment rate.

He stated, “I am well aware that for some time now the conversations and debates have centred on the rising cost of living, high inflation which is now above 28% and the unacceptable high under-employment rate.”

Addressing the concerns of hardworking Nigerians across various regions, he acknowledged their struggles and emphasised his commitment to serving the interests of the people.

President Tinubu also highlighted the government’s efforts in addressing security challenges, working to ensure peace and security in homes, workplaces, and on the roads. While recognising that all security problems may not be fully solved, he assured citizens that the government is tirelessly working towards providing peace of mind to all.

He concluded by expressing the government’s dedication to freeing captives from abductors and continuing efforts to create a secure and stable environment for all residents in Nigeria.
