Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has officially assented to two bills that will establish new specialised universities in Osun and Ekiti States. The newly established institutions are the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti.
The president emphasised that these universities would meet the educational needs of the communities while advancing research and innovation in fields critical to Nigeria’s growth.
With these new institutions, Nigeria now has 63 approved federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities, according to the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Additionally, President Tinubu also approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni Town, Tai, Rivers, as well as the federal government’s takeover of a private university in Southern Kaduna, which will be transformed into a federal institution.

In a statement issued by his spokesman Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said that the new universities would serve as training hubs for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global stage.
“According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria currently has 63 approved federal universities, 63 state universities and 149 private universities.”
“The President approved establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town of Tai, Rivers.
“The President also consented to the Federal Government takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna and its transformation into a federal university.” the President added.
