President Tinubu Orders NEMA to Aid Maiduguri Flood Victims, Pledges Federal Support

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide assistance to flood victims in parts of Maiduguri, Borno State, pledging to mobilise federal resources to support the state.

He issued the directive on Tuesday through a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

While relevant authorities continue to assess the damage caused by the floods, the President also called for the immediate evacuation of individuals from the affected regions.

President Tinubu further assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is prepared to collaborate in addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of those impacted.

Expressing his concern over the severe flooding, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the state government and residents, particularly to families who have lost their livelihoods due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.

The intense flooding has affected Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, nearly isolating major parts of the area from the rest of the state. Reports include the deaths of livestock and the closure of businesses and schools as the floods have overtaken the town.

Described as the worst in recent decades, the floods resulted from heavy rainfall and the overflow of the Alau Dam, leading to the displacement of thousands of residents and disrupting facilities such as the Post Office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
