During a bilateral discussion with the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union, President Azali Assoumani, in New York, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of securing consensus positions for Africa on global economic and socio-political matters.
President Tinubu called upon African leaders to work together in constructing a sustainable development model that transcends narrow visions and propels the continent towards prosperity. He underscored the essential role of freedom and constitutional order in achieving sustainable development, emphasising that these principles are fundamental to progress.
He acknowledged the AU’s efforts in promoting peace, particularly in the Sahel region, and in mediating between warring factions in Sudan. President Tinubu commended the ongoing peace negotiations in Sudan and stressed the significance of peace and stability in AU member states as prerequisites for harnessing developmental opportunities.
President Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s willingness to collaborate with the AU in promoting peace and stability on the continent, highlighting the importance of unity among African nations. While emphasising Nigeria’s commitment to cooperation, he also emphasised the need to move beyond divisive perspectives on Africa’s future.
In response, President Azali Assoumani, Chairperson of the African Union, reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to complement Nigeria’s efforts in securing peace and prosperity in Africa rather than competing with them. He highlighted the AU’s responsibility in addressing extra-constitutional power struggles on the continent and acknowledged Nigeria’s stance on these critical matters.
