President Bola Tinubu has officially signed into law a bill establishing the North-Central Development Commission (NCDC).
This was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a Senate session on Tuesday.
“Let me also inform my colleagues that Mr President has also assented to the North-Central Development Commission establishment bill 2024, to bring development to the grassroots,” Akpabio said.
The NCDC bill, which aims to foster development in the North Central region, was sponsored by Abba Moro, the senator for Benue South and Senate Minority Leader, alongside other lawmakers from the region.
The bill, which had passed its first and second readings in the Senate in 2023 and early 2024, was originally introduced in the 9th Senate but failed to secure presidential assent before the end of that term.
In addition to the NCDC bill, President Tinubu also assented to bills establishing a federal polytechnic in Rano, Kano State, and a federal university of health sciences in Tsafe, Zamfara State.
On Monday, he also signed the Federal University of Environment and Technology Establishment Bill, which creates a new university in Ogoni, Rivers State.
Senate President Akpabio expressed his hope that the NCDC would drive significant grassroots development in the region, bringing both progress and peace to its people as part of the ongoing effort to strengthen the nation.
“… we congratulate the good people of the North-Central region of Nigeria, and we wish them more development and particularly peace, as we forge ahead in the task of nation-building,” he said.
