President Bola Tinubu says his administration is committed to tackling security challenges and fostering peace across Nigeria and the African continent.
Tinubu also pledged to work towards stabilising the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in his capacity as Chairman of its Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The President’s assurance came during the closing ceremony of the African Military Games 2024 in Abuja.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented him at the event, conveyed Tinubu’s vision of strengthening ties among African nations to build solidarity and cooperation among their military forces.
“Let me use this opportunity to declare the resolve and unflinching commitment of my administration to rid the nation of security threats and violent crimes,” the President stated.
He further stressed, “As the ECOWAS Chairman, I want to emphasise my determination to stabilise the sub-region and indeed the entire African continent to ensure its prosperity. To accomplish this vision, I consider strengthening ties across African countries to foster a deep sense of camaraderie among our troops as a priority.”
President Tinubu highlighted the importance of the event, held two decades after its inaugural edition, as an avenue to reinforce collaboration in tackling security issues across the continent. He expressed optimism that the games would promote a renewed sense of partnership and unity among African militaries.
Commending the participants and organisers, Tinubu praised Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Major General M Abdullahi, for the successful coordination of the event.
The President also congratulated athletes from across Africa for their professionalism and sportsmanship.
Team Nigeria emerged as the overall winner, securing 234 medals, including 114 golds, while Algeria and Kenya claimed second and third positions, respectively.
