President Bola Tinubu has suspended Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in response to grave allegations of corruption.

The suspension is accompanied by a directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial dealings within the Ministry and its affiliated agencies. Edu is mandated to hand over her responsibilities to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary and fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

This was contained in a statement released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity. He added that these measures take immediate effect and signify President Tinubu’s commitment to combat corruption and ensure the effective utilisation of public resources for the betterment of all Nigerians.

In addition, a panel chaired by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been established. This panel’s primary objective is to comprehensively review the financial structure of social investment programs, aiming to enact significant reforms for the benefit of marginalised households and to restore public trust in these initiatives.
