Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed confidence that, under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria is on the right trajectory towards reclaiming its greatness.

Shettima emphasised the importance of shared commitment, mutual respect, and open dialogue in paving the way for a brighter future for Nigerians.

Addressing attendees at The Sun Newspapers Awards in Lagos over the weekend, Shettima, represented by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, underscored the pivotal role of the media in achieving national progress.

In his speech titled “Celebrating Excellence, Building Together: Our Commitment to Press Freedom and Media Development in Nigeria,” the Vice President lauded the media’s role as watchdogs, truth-seekers, and champions of citizen empowerment.

Shettima advocated for collaboration between the media and the government, urging transparency and open access to information to ensure journalists can work freely and safely.

He highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to a vibrant press, recognising that a free and independent media is indispensable for a healthy democracy.

While championing press freedom, Shettima urged the media to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and avoid sensationalism to counter misinformation and disinformation.

The Vice President commended the government’s recent strides in economic reforms, addressing security challenges, and investing in infrastructure, including the removal of fuel subsidies.

Shettima also outlined initiatives such as the Pulaku Initiative, aimed at resolving farmer-herder conflicts and revitalising affected communities through infrastructure development.

He lauded the sacrifices of journalists and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to collaborating with the media to build a prosperous future for all Nigerians.

Speaking at the event, Chairman Senator George Akume assured Nigerians that the economic challenges facing the nation would soon be overcome, emphasising the collective responsibility of citizens in nation-building. He affirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to steering Nigeria towards a brighter future under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
