Following parliament approval on Wednesday,President William Ruto is set to swear in Kenya’s new 22-member cabinet on Thursday October 27, 2022.
Ruto appointed former head of the central bank, Njuguna Ndung’u as the new treasury secretary; former parliament speaker, Justin Muturi, will be the new attorney general.
He retained a minister from his predecessor’s cabinet as a adviser on national security and introduced the position of a prime cabinet secretary.
In spite of pledging gender parity, Ruto nominated only seven women to the 22 ministerial positions, with two women as presidential advisers and one woman cabinet secretary.
On Tuesday, the president said he will need up to a year to stabilise the price of maize, a staple for many Kenyans.
The new team will be tasked with immediately reducing the cost of living and stemming food insecurity due to prolonged drought.
