After sacked Police boss, Saadaq Omar Hassan, rebuffed the extension of Somali President, Mohammed Abdullah’s term, gunshots rang round the capital city, in Mogadishu late Friday night.
Government troops faced off with forces loyal to the dismissed Police Chief.
Calm was however restored to the country but pro-Hassan protesters thronged the streets to express their displeasure with the President.
The latest clash shows the cracks in Somalia’s security architecture, giving opportunities for terrorist organisations like al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab to fester in the nation.
There are imminent fears that the opposition will form a parallel government in the country after lawmakers agreed to a two-year extension for the President.
The American Government through its Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said Somalia may not get its usual aid from the country as it condemned the decision not to hold an election.
The British Government also warned of dire consequences and a breakdown in its partnership with Somalia if the term extension is served.
