Prevent Nationwide Protest in Lagos – Lawmakers Urge Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State House of Assembly and Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take action to prevent a planned nationwide hunger protest in the state.

The lawmakers want Sanwo-Olu to hold town-hall meetings with key stakeholders, including political leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, market heads, and transport sector representatives, to find ways to calm the youth and potential protest supporters.

Speaker Dr. Mudashiru Obasa stressed the importance of protecting lives and property.

“State governments must do the needful calming frayed nerves and ensure protection of lives and property,” the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, said during a plenary session on Thursday.

The Lagos State House of Assembly, led by Majority Leader Noheem Adams, expressed concern over the potential impact of a planned protest, recalling the damage caused by the 2020 EndSARS protests.

Lawmakers also urged parents to advise their children against joining the protest or engaging in criminal activities.

Meanwhile, the Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to engage stakeholders in dialogue to avoid violence in the country.

Also, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has advised residents, especially the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), to avoid any protests in the state.

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, also urged Nigerians to be cautious about participating in the protest. Afenifere acknowledged the right to protest but stressed the need to consider the current situation in the country.
