Former president Ahmed Abdallah Sambi is being tried for high treason, and prosecutors on the African island country have asked for him to be sentenced to life in prison.
Sambi, 64, was president from 2006 to 2011 and has been held in custody since 2018 on accusations of corrupt actions.
Theformer president has been accused of selling passports to people without citizenship who were living in the Gulf countries in return for money. His prosecution is based on these claims.
According to the privately-owned Comoros Infos website, he was tried in absentia because he refused to appear in court. His sentencing is scheduled for November 28.
