Poland’s foreign minister announced on Wednesday that a group of Polish students and their teacher, who were detained in Nigeria during protests, have now been released.
The Nigerian national security agency detained the seven Polish citizens earlier this month in Kano, accusing them of having a suspicious role in the protests and flying Russian flags.
According to the Polish authorities, the detained individuals were University of Warsaw students and teachers who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Radoslaw Sikorski, the country’s foreign minister, confirmed the group’s release, stating that they are now back at the Kano campus and have their passports.
Sikorski also remarked that the students have had an accelerated lesson in African studies and expressed hope that they will return to Poland soon.
Nigeria is currently facing a significant cost-of-living crisis after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu implemented economic reforms to stimulate the economy and attract foreign investment.
