Drivers of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on Monday, left thousands of passengers stranded, after unceremoniously downing tools over non-payment of salaries.
The striking drivers who are working for one of the companies operating the service, Primero Transport Services Limited, did not turn up to pick passengers who were waiting at bus stops and terminals across the state, alleging non-payment of their December take-home.
From Sunday, January 14, there were long queues across BRT waiting points in Lagos state, as passengers relying on the service waited long hours with no hope of a single bus in sight.
A staff of Primero TSL who spoke with The Punch on condition of anonymity, said the drivers had embarked on strike since Saturday, December 13. However, he declined to expatiate any further on the matter.
“The strike started yesterday (Saturday). They are on strike because their December pay has not been given to them,” he disclosed.
The employee however, said the strike may not linger for too long, as the matter will be quickly resolved.
Primero’s Managing Director, Mr Fola Tinubu, and the Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mrs Abimbola Akinajo are yet to issue a statement on the development.
