Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina has submitted her resignation and fled the country over ongoing protests.
Hasina boarded a military helicopter after crowds ignored a national curfew to storm the prime minister’s palace in Dhaka.
At least 300 people have been killed from the weeks of agitation after authorities tried to crush the protests.
On Sunday, deadly violence killed about 100 on Sunday, causing tension into Monday as protesters called for a march on Dhaka and the military decided to persuade the protesters in a national broadcast.
Local media reported that the mood on the streets had turned celebratory after the news of Hasina’s departure spread.
Bangladeshi Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman cancelled his planned briefing and called on major political parties, including the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for deliberations.
